Protected Species

The Balearic Islands boast a high number of singular and unique species. Most of the animal species and a large number of the plant species on the islands are protected.

- Red-Crested Pochard (Netta rufina): A rare species in Spain. On the Balearic Islands it is increasing its number as a result of a breeding programme.

- Yellow Wagtail (Montacilla flava): A migratory species which lives and nests in marshy areas, particularly in the saltwort bushes.

- Common Sandpiper (Actitid hypoleucos): Migratory bird, relatively abundant, especially in spring and autumn.

- European Pond Terrapin (Emys orbicularis): Aquatic terrapin found only in S'Albufera in Mallorca.
