Underwater world
The clear waters of the Mediterranean are home to spectacularly colourful life forms. With a simple snorkelling mask, visitors can discover dozens of species of algae, invertebrates and fish that have no reason to envy the vestments of their cousins in the tropical reefs.
Alcúdia's coastline, which is 30 km long, has varied ecosystems with fine sand beaches, small peeble coves and spectacular cliffs. Thus it is posible to find all types of sea beds and a great deal of different animal and plant marine species. These are some examples:
- Learned Rockfish (Serranus scriba): A member of the serranidae family which includes such species like the grouper. It has an unmistakable blue mark on its belly. It is non-aggressive in behaviour and somewhat shy but an active predator of other fish.
- Yellow sponge (Clathrina clathrus). This showy sponge gets the clear waters around it circulate through its complex system of ducts and by filtering it takes in its meagre quantities of daily food.
- Sea Anemone (Anemonia sulcata). In the same way, the waving tentacles of the Sea anemone sweep the surrounding area to capture any small creature or fragment of organic matter on its sticky and stinging surface.
- Posidonia oceanica: It is quite likely that when diving around the coast of Alcúdia, visitors will find themselves floating over extensive fields of Posidonia oceanica, the submerged woods of the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to synthetising enormous quantities of oxygen, it shelters dozens of species of flora and fauna in and above their foliage providing them with support, protection, food and refuge.
