Sant Antoni, night of foguerons (bonfires) and devils
January 16th is a special night in Alcúdia. It's the revetlla of Sant Antoni Abat (Sant Antoni's Eve),the Patron Saint of domestic animals, and one of the most magical nights in Mallorca when former fertility rituals were held. The ritual remembers all temptations this saint had to overcome in the desert. There are foguerons (bonfires) in many parts of the town, with the additional participation of devils, who scare children away with sticks and bells. During the night the alcudiencs approach the foguerons to grill their sobrassades i botifarrons (local sausages), meanwhile eerie songs are accompanied by the mesmeric rhythm of the ximbomba.
Next day events, on Janyary 17th, consist on the beneïdes (public blessing of animals) at Sant Jaume's Church.
