Can Torró, a pioneering library on the Balearic Islands
One of the most illustrious inhabitants of Alcúdia is Reinhard Mohn, born in Germany and one of the most important publishers in Europe. He discovered this Mediterranean retreat and granted it the library Can Torró. It was the most innovating library in the Balearic Islands when it was built, and it is an example for all librarian students.
The first wise step was to find an appropriate place. The historical building Can Torró was the selected one. Recently the attached house of Can Fondo, another jewel of the 14th century, has been linked to the library.
From the very first moment the library was thought as a multimedia centre, a place for dynamic leisure for everybody, far away from the traditional concept of book store. You'll see kids playing in the evenings in the game room, students doing their homework, adults looking for a book and people just reading the newspapers. But Can Torró is a great deal more. There are varied art exhibitions as well as jazz concerts and conferences. Can Torró has been, is now, and will be a reference in Alcúdias culture.
